1. Don’t be afraid to start small.

Your home doesn’t have to be the best-looking home on the block, especially if you’re a new homeowner and you’ve never hung up holiday lights before in your life.

Start small and only place lights on a few trees or bushes in your yard to serve as primary focal points. Each year, you can add a little more and in no time, you’ll be the eye-catching home of your neighborhood each holiday season.

2. Test your lights.

The worst thing in the world (no, we’re not exaggerating) is hanging up all of your lights on your roof, trees and railings to find out that some, if not all, don’t work.

Before you get going on hanging your outdoor lighting, double check that your lights are ready to go and working as they should be by simply plugging them into a nearby, preferably low-placed, outlet.

3. Use newer, safer hanging products.

If you can avoid it, please never use nails, staples, screws or hooks to mount your holiday outdoor lighting decorations.

Light clips, such as shingle tabs or parapet clips, can easily be installed on your home’s gutters or shingles, making them the ideal choice for holiday outdoor lighting installation. You can also use electrical tape as a safe and easy alternative.

4. Start at the bottom and work your way up.

Instead of mindlessly throwing your holiday outdoor lights on aspects of your yard, have an intent strategy in mind. One of our favorite strategies that helps give your home a uniform, clean look is to start at the bottom of the features in your yard that you want to decorate and to work your way up from there.

For example, if you’re trying to illuminate a tree, start at the base of the trunk and, in a spiraling motion, wrap your lights around.

If you’re really particular, decide on a set spacing amount between the lights and stick to that measurement (depending on how large your tree or bush is, a half-foot is usually a reliable go-to measurement).

5. Revel in the holiday beauty of your home.

Now that all your hard work is out of the way, don’t just move on to your next task on your holiday to-do list — take the time to enjoy your holiday creation.

Take pictures to send to your friends and family or to share on social media. Make yourself a batch of hot cocoa and bundle up and intimately enjoy them with a close loved one.

However you choose to enjoy your outdoor lighting, we encourage you to take a moment to appreciate all of the work you just put into making your home a holiday masterpiece.
